Bridal Beauty Series: Metallic Makeup Inspiration

From antique gold, burnished bronze, platinum sparkle or silver lids, metallic makeup can be the perfect marriage of beautifying makeup and edgy cool. If you want your bridal beauty to reflect your trendy style, don’t be afraid to add a little sparkle and sheen from these earthy, rich, and luminous tones.

Some key tips for applying metallic eyeshadow are:

  • Wet your synthetic brush (so it is damp, not soaking) before applying product to your lids. The moisture really brings out the beautiful sheen of the pigment, unless it is a really cheap eyeshadow. I recommend a synthetic brush because it lays the color down onto the lid rather than buffing it on, like a fluffy brush would. Try a eyeshadow primer if your eyeshadow is more talc than pigment.
  • Splurge on a pigment (MAC makes great ones, and Illamasqua do beautiful creams). If you are employing a makeup artist, she/he will have something of higher quality available for you.
  • Do a test run with the look, wear it out and about and see how the makeup sits and feels for the day and night.
  • Apply some kind of base to your eyelid, so the powder has something to cling to. Concealer, foundation, eyeshadow primer all work.
  • Remember to have a dark black or charcoal to blend at the lash line and contour your socket line. You need definition with this look, and you’ll see that trend in all the images below, plus plenty of black mascara. Individual false lashes are very complimentary to this look.
  • If you decide to splurge on a metallic pigment, you can use it after the big day to add interest to a smokey eye, as a highlighter (I would recommend something in the gold to platinum range for this), or you can even mix it with clear nail polish for a custom nail varnish. Pigments can be sheered out or applied with more opacity, so you can really customize the product to suit your look and lifestyle.
  • Go bold and try mixing metals- gold on the inner corners and a rusty copper in the crease can look really beautiful. Add a gunmetal grey liner and black mascara, and you have a look. You can also use metallic accents to add contrast to your smokey eyes, especially in the inner corners.
