Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue…
Everyone has heard the old saying, but have we ever tried to uncover the origin and symbolism behind these words? From a little online (Google) digging, I found out the following: The infamous line is from an old English rhyme. So, like almost all of North American culture, we can thank the Brits for passing along yet another tradition that has stood the test of time. The old refers to something from the bride’s past, i.e. her family ties, which she will be bringing with her into her new life. Something new points to her new life, new husband and new journey in her life. Something borrowed is believed to be something of luck and most likely from a relative or friend with good fortune in their own marriage.
The something blue part is very interesting. Some believe the symbolism lies in the Virgin Mary, as a sign of purity and virginity. Another theory is that in the late 19th century, blue was a popular color for wedding gowns. Something blue could have originated in ancient Rome where blue was believed to symbolize love, modesty and fidelity.
Whatever the origin, some traditions sustain for a reason. I quite like the old-fashioned whimsy of the something blue- and who doesn’t need a healthy dose of superstition now and then? From eyes to lips or finger tips, be bold, and make your something blue memorable.
